Long Radius vs Short Radius

Elbow centre-line radius: long radius is 1.5 times the nominal diameter, short radius is 1.0 — a pressure drop and space trade-off.

Long radius is the default because the gentler turn costs less pressure drop and erodes more slowly. Short radius is specified where space is tight, and 3D and 5D induction bends where flow conditions or pigging require an even gentler turn. On slurry and erosive duty the radius choice matters more than the material: a short radius elbow wears through at the extrados first.
